OK. My recommendation centers around HP scanners. I tend to prefer those,
but others on the list might have different recommendations. I have owned a
couple and have obtained excellent reliability and results. Plus, HP seems
to be pretty good about updating drivers to fix problems, etc. I have also
had good luck on the couple of rare occasions that I needed to obtain
service from HP.

First, I suspect you are going to want a flatbed - so you can open a music
book and put it on the scanner. Unfortunately, most of the flatbeds out
there have a maximum size of 8.5 x 11.7" - not large enough for your needs.
Many of these scanners (including many HP models) can handle 8.5 x 14 by
using a sheet feeder - but that doesn't solve the "opening a book" problem.

The HP 7400C, however, will handle 8.5 x 14 directly. However, it isn't
cheap. It's $499 on the hpshopping.com site; www.pcconnection.com is a
little less, I think. There are other models above this in the line as well;
for example, the 7450C adds a document feeder.

If you always have the music you want to scan as individual sheets (not
bound into a book), you can save yourself some dollars by going with a
sheet-feed only scanner, such as a a Visioneer Strobe. I think these are
about $190 at PC Connection (www.pcconnection.com). I don't have any direct
experience with this product but I have heard good things.

One other thing to look into: if you are looking for an all-in-one solution
(scanner, printer, fax, etc.) then HP, Brother, and Canon (probably Xerox as
well) make some nice solutions. I have an HP LaserJet 3100 on my desk that
does printing, faxing, copying, and scanning. (It is black-and-white only,
so I also have an HP 6250 flatbed for color work). However, it is
sheet-feed. Again, comes down to whether you have to scan bound music books.

The scan quality of the HP (and probably the Visioneer as well) are well
above what is required to scan sheet music. Just one observation, however. I
have had to scan a couple pieces of music for my daughter's voice lessons.
While the source material was crisply printed, using black-and-white scan
mode yielded terrible results. 8-bit grayscale was much better.

Disclaimer: though I worked for HP many years ago, I don't have any business
ties to them at the moment.
