I totally agree Neil. We have to remember thought that one tendency in
learning is that the better you become the slower we improve. Compare
the night and day improvement that a beginner makes in their first 3-4
years of playing with the amount of improvement from year 15-18 .....
sounds good at 15 years and might have some tone improvements and plenty
of technique improvements in those 3 years, but not night and day.
Marcellus is arguably one of the premier clarinetists to walk the earth
in history. To me he was close to perfection and if he says he gets
better and maybe closer to perfect every few months I'm not going to
argue with that. I'll bet he focused his practice better than I will
ever be able to.

Months? I observe discernible steps forward in my playing from week to
week,
sometimes over just a few days, directly attributable to the 45 minutes
of long
tones and Baermann III exercises with which I begin each practice
session. I've
always known there was something perverse about me for actually enjoying
it! It's
almost effortless in a way. You put in the focused time, and the
benefits are
unmistakable.
