Annie,
The thing that I don't like or appreciate about a discourse such as this
one is that I believe it is up to individuals to decide for themselves what
quality is. Artistry can be heard in all music (well perhaps not *all*
music- Babbitt comes to mind ;) ) depending on the listener's perceptions,
influences, life experiences, etc. I know people who would roll their eyes
at Barber's Adagio for Strings but would shed a tear to Heaven by Eric
Clapton (a non-musician as someone wrote earlier). The rolled eyes is
attributable to a lack of understanding or appreciation, much like the
erroneous title bestowed upon Clapton.
I like Artie Shaw, Frank Sinatra, Tears for Fears, Stevie Wonder (the 20th
century's greatest musician IMNSHO), Thomas Dolby, the Gipsy Kings, etc.
just as much as I like Brahms, Barber, Ravel, Berg, etc. These are personal
choices I make about music that "speaks to" or appeals to me. Bach has
never interested me all that much, although I do appreciate and admire his
work. But these are *my* opinions, *my* musical tastes. If anyone tries to
tell me that I am a imbecile about music for that, that's *your* problem,
not mine. But, I betcha I can play better than most of you! Oh yeah, that's
subjective too.
