Perhaps I'd agree with you as to the early years, but in the mid-later years
I'd heartily disagree. By the time Sgt. Pepper rolled around they were
consummate musicians to me, and whatever you may say can't change the fact
that I and many, many others consider them so. But, as they say, YMMV.

Recording backing tracks without "live" musicians? So what? That does not
make the person who sequences/arranges/"performs" the music less of a
musician in my mind. It's the tool they're using that you seem to object to.
A sequencer/synth combo can be a killer "instrument", in the hands of a
master - unfortunately there are few masters.

What of composers/musicians who use tape/digital/whatever as an
accompaniment _as a requirement_ for a performance? Are those people who
play those compositions _less_ of a musician than others? Is the composer
_less_ of a composer?
