The Latin jazz - Africa Cuban jazz documentary "Calle 54" opened in
Vancouver last night. What an amazing and wonderful show! It's 99%
pure music and what great music! I urge everyone to see/hear it. I
defy anyone to sit still while you watch!! I spent most of the time
grinning from ear to ear, and though the small audience was very
reserved, we actually applauded several amazing performances. If you
liked "Buena Vista Social Club", I think you'll like this as well or
more. Some of the portraits of musicians created are very intimate,
like the father and son duo of Bebo and Chucho Valdes (hope I remember
the names correctly) and they "speak" to one another through music -it's
a joy to see/hear. Really, it's a history of this kind of music, with
portraits og greats like Paquito Di'Rivera, Tito Puente and many more
whose names I can't recall.

BTW, in the opening segment, Paquita Di'Rivera (sp?) plays a great sax
solo, but it's his clarinet playing that rivets me and burns up the
screen - incredibly luscious tone - he's playing an unstained wood
clarinet with no name or label on it and a slightly bulbous barrel.
Does anyone know what make of clarinet and barrel that would be?

Calle 54 is the best music themed movie I've ever seen. I don't think
anyone going to see it will be disappointed. Usual disclaimer - no one
paid me to see, gush over or in any way promote this movie (I wish they
would have!).
