I got a laugh out of your description of the gnome doing QC...
Anyway, the Vandoren brochure (downloaded from their web site) says:
"Professional musicians test mouthpieces
for quality, sound, and pitch."
Of course, it doesn't say what happens as a result of the test. ;-)
