A drum major (also sometimes called a Field Major, a term I actually
prefer) is the conductor of a marching ensemble. The drum/field major is
usually a member of the ensemble, not an official staff member or faculty
member. They are essentially the section leader for the entire band, and
instead of playing, they flap their arms in a feeble attempt to fly.
