For what it's worth, when I started playing the clarinet in 1966, my band
director insisted that all of us start with Vandoren 2RV mouthpieces (and
Vandoren #3 reeds). He didn't really care what kind of starter clarinet we
had as long as we were all using the 2RV.

I used that mouthpiece until I got to college, when I switched to a B45
(1972).

I'm still using the B45, on my R-13 (the one that I picked up in a Lubbock
pawn shop in 1977 for $50), and still produce a tone that I find rich and
full.

I've tried many other mouthpieces (spent a whole morning at the
Brasswinds/Woodwinds shop in Indiana trying them out), but have never found
one that I like enough better to spring for the extra money.
