When I studied clarinet at Oberlin, I always stood at my lesson. I also
played double lip embochure at the time, and I did not enjoy standing,
but felt that I had to, not only for lessons, but for performances. I
feel that I screwed up an important audition of the Copland Clarinet
Concerto during my Junior year because of trying to stand up and play
the entire piece with double-lip embochure. Mr. Weber had taught me to
play with double lip, and I eventually switched to single lip.
When I started teaching in the fall, I didn't even think about or
consider having my students "stand" for their lessons. In fact, the
music stand in my studio has never been raised to a standing level. I
have enough "standing" to do with my jazz performances, which sometimes
go on for hours. The atmosphere in my studio is rather laid back, and I
intend to keep it that way. I have set very high musical standards for
my students, and try to concentrate on the music. In my opinion, I
cannot see any benefit for standing during the lessons. ANNIE
