My teachers have always had me sit. I had an experience similar to
your student's with standing and playing last week, though. I was
playing in an Independence Day parade while suffering from a mild case
of bronchitis. The parade was a very low-key affair--we didn't march
and play at the same time, but stood still to play, and it was only
about three blocks long. I got dizzy while playing, tried to fight
it off while only fingering along, passed out, and ended up scraping
my knees, chipping three front teeth, and giving everyone around me
a scare. If I had been smart enough to sit down when the dizziness
didn't go away, I would have spared myself quite some unpleasantness.
It felt like the blowing against resistance is what pushed me over
the edge. Playing clarinet is hard work!
