I've enjoyed the poetry vs. music discussion.
It's possible I missed it (I'm on the digest, so I do occasionally slide
over items), but I think one of the best marriages of text and music must be
Handel's Messiah. It is almost impossible to read the biblical passages
without hearing the music in your mind; it's just as hard to hear the music
without visualizing the text. I would have to say that the Brahams German
Requiem is almost as powerful a merging of words and music.

I have always been amazed that the German Handel could handle the English
text so well.
