Subj: [kl] Mr Oldrich F. Pergl, Sr. 1911-2001

It is with regret that I advise of the passing on June 27 of Mr Pergl at
age 89 in Hamilton, Ontario.

Many of you will remember him as the clarinetist in the renown Czech
Nonet.

He was also a member of the Czech Philharmonic, principal of the Czech
Radio Orchestra and the Prague National Theatre Opera Orchestra. In
1965 he became Professor of Clarinet at Prague State University.

Oldrich and Josefine Pergl left their homeland with their two children
in 1968, after the Soviet invasion. He taught briefly at the University
of Toronto then moved to nearby Hamilton.

A 19 year member of the Nonet, he performed the world premiere of the
last work by Martinu (which they commissioned) as well as the Czech
premiere of Prokofiev's "Hebrew Melodies" with the composer at the
piano.

We in Canada were honoured to have had him with us. He would have turned
90 today, the 4th of July.
