The cork itself is cheap (eg.: leather 1DM, cork 0.70DM). However, it
needs some skills to replace a cork pad (to get a good seal), because it
is not flexible. Anyway, you pay for the time, not for the material. Cork
lasts longer than your clarinet (nearly :-). Many hautbois (sp?) players
use them for their very small holes.

I have leather pads on my instruments. They seem to last about >6 years.
But that depends on actual playing time and weather conditions. The
advantage for me is that I can replace them myself. Perhaps next time I
will give cork a try for the upper joint pads, because they are not
affected by water so much as leather.
