Jessica,
If you can play the passage Chromatically to G and then smear the
rest of the way up, that should be good enough. I don't think you have
to have an "open" mouthpiece. I don't. If you can get to where you can
play the passage and start smearing on G, gently sliding your fingers
off the keys to the left, sort of thinking whoo-ahhh, and hit it
consistently, then I bet you could make it from C to C before long.
Jessica, it is not too late. Where are you anyhow? I think I have a good
smear on my website, and I can remember everything I had to do to get
it. The smear is from D to D on "Moose" (the Northern Exposure Theme)
at:
www.citystar.com/ramlinannie. As I recall, it didn't sound good for a
while, especially after my stroke when my whole embochure felt funky as
I temporarily forgot how to cover the holes of the clarinet correctly,
but after a while it started sounding good all the time. Write me again.
