....not that it makes any difference, but when I looked at my copy of my
letter to the school district, the children were subjected to four hours
of 101-109 dB A-weighted. So my example of 79 dB was ridiculously low.

What really frosted me was that most of the parents (myself included)
could not force themselves to stand inside the building themselves while
chaperoning; but with few exceptions, most of them grumped at me when I
tried to discuss the issue and they said "Don't ruin the kids' fun."

The social pressures on children to "get in there and have some fun, be
cool!" are intense. My daughter has hypersensitive hearing and won't
go to symphonies or "Stomp!" or musical theater with me, and yet I could
not convince her to go home that night. The best I could do was to
remind her how thirsty she was (the punch bowl and cookies were
outside). I chosenot to 'kidnap' her and drag her home, but I felt
deeply guilty about not doing so.

There are a number of self-destructive behaviors that have irresistible
appeal for some people, especially when peer pressure is involved. But
why parents feel the need to encourage their children in this direction
is beyond me --- especially when parents won't subject themselves to the
same thing.
