A few weeks ago I wrote about complaining in a Best Buy store because of the
excessive noise in there from radio, TV, DVD, CD speakers all turned up extra
loud. The noise was over my pain threshhold and loud enough to damage hearing
IMHO. I took my two kids (daughter is age 4 and son was then age 7) out of
there in a hurry with some words to them about avoiding really loud noise if
they want protect their ears for hearing music. Over the weekend I went back
to the same Best Buy. I don't know if they listened to me or if other people
said something or what, but I swear the noise in there was half as loud as
last time. It was no worse than most other stores. It still sounded like
feeding time at the zoo because of a lot of different things all playing at
once, but at least I'm pretty sure it couldn't damage someone's hearing. I
hope other people will complain in the theater and other places where they
turn up the sounds systems too much. Complaining really does work if we are
reasonable, explain why and act polite. Even if the people who work there
already went deaf from hearing that noise all the time until they can't tell
the difference, they don't want to drive out paying customers who think this
way of creating "exciting environment" is noise pollution.

With both my kids in music lessons I was really encouraged by this experience.
There is hope! I am going to write a thank you note to the store manager
just to let them know a customer noticed and appreciated it. Postive feedback!
