Tony

as to what you say about fundamental teacvhing, I quite agree. That is why
I, and also my students are so enthusiastic about the De Haske method. This
method also trains the ears in a good manner (in my opinion).

What you said about teaching swing: I agree with you when talking about the
absolute beginners, but this woman plays the saxophone now since 4 1/2
years, and she asked me several times to play swing qith her. Of course I
don't give her music that Benny Goodman played (I admire him, too, but won't
even try to play his music myself), but there are a few very nice books of
swing duets we play together. I don't have the title at hand, but if you
want to know I can look it up for you.

And of course we just continue the "classical" way.

One must respect this woman: she lost the fourth finger of her right hand
(counting the thumb number one), but even the director of the band that I
play in and in that she joined ti play about 3 years ago, never noticed it:
she can play the most difficult parts she gets (indicating either that she
is very good, or the music we play is very simple. Both is the case).

A to your final question:

<<

Rien, are you saying when you tell us that you are an amateur teacher, that
you teach without asking for any remuneration?

>>

No, I did not want to say that, although indeed I never got paid for my
lessons. I just meant that I am just an amateur player, who teaches clarinet
and saxophone for lack of a good teacher in Maartensdijk. It has always been
my opinion, that it would be better if there were a pro teacher: they have
been educated for it.

But our community has now been incorporated into another one, and in that
community is a music school, that the inhabitants of Maartensdijk now can
visit without having to pay exorbitant fees. So tomorrow I will teach the
last time. Friday my second son and I will be off to Kiew, and make a trip
of ten days visiting also Rumania and Bulgaria, and when we come back summer
holidays will have begun.

After summer holidays all my pupils will be taught by professionals. In
fact, I will take lessons again myself! I really look forward to it.

Sorry for the length of this posting

Rien
