Here's my two-penneth.

I recently found another use for long Bb (LH 1, RH 1): In the fourth of of
the five Finzi bagatelles, when the music shifts from E (I think) back to Eb
in a rather magical manner, the first note of the new key is clarion Bb. On
my instrument long Bb gives a slightly more subdued tone quality which fits
the mood of the final section and contrasts nicely the relatively bright
B-natural from which it shifted. Different fingerings can be used not only
for ease of facility but for timbral effect, to influence the mood of a
passage; this is something worth considering when you have to or more viable
fingerings, especially in the altissimo register where some fingerings give
a particluar ring to the note which makes them preferrable to others which
are equally stable and in tune.
