>In one of our Christmas concerts we played the original "Sleigh Ride" by
Wolfgangs father Leopold Mozart, arranged for concert band. At first we
played it as written, then only with woodwinds. Sounded better. Then our
conductor had the bass and contra clarinets try to play as if we were cellos
and string basses without tonging the notes to get that zoom-zoom sound of
the lower strings played with a bow. It came out great! More like a
symphony. Now, when we play a part that is normaly played by a bowed cello
or base, we use this technique. This came about after he had read a
blistering reveiw of one of the top community bands over here by a music
critic that said without the cellos and basses, the middle (?) was weak and
the whole band was not much more than a big accordian with brass
accompanant. The critic must have been an out-of-work cellist.
