Tony,

Poor transcription is just one problem that we have. Publishers -- even the
major ones -- have gotten downright sloppy. While I was playing with the
community band, at least one in three new publication had major (or in some
cases, just absurd) mistakes. It's possible that computer technology is to
blame -- an assumption on my part. Clarinet parts in three flats: Bb, Eb,
and Fb. Measures left out. Eight-bar sections not transposed from concert
pitch. Double bars in the middle of phrases with no rational reason -- that
aren't in some other parts. (One of the most entertaining ones: A
three-page 2d clarinet part, the second page of which showed to be in TENOR
CLEF!) Not clarinet, but 1st, 2d, & 3rd Trumpet parts each in a different
key for the same section of music. Sounded ... interesting, to say the
least. We had a full score that the center six pages were from an entirely
different composition. We sight read a lot of music, and it made it really
strange sometimes.

If one-third of the transcripts I provided for the court system had this
level of mistakes, I wouldn't have a job very long. I don't think anyone is
proofing the parts before they are printed in a lot of firms, or maybe they
just proof at random and part here or there.
