I have a sound card question also:

My music program gives me a pull-down menu of "general MIDI" instruments
(more than 100 of them), but many of these instruments produce the same
sound. Furthermore, some of them don't sound much like the actual
instrument.

Is this the 'fault' of the generic sound card that came with my low-end
Compaq, or is it the fault of my sound card's driver, or both? If I
want to move up, but I don't feel any compulsion to own
state-of-the-art, what are the 'key words' that will point me in the
proper direction?

(Right now, the program says that it is using Microsoft's Midi-Mapper
--- although I don't know if Midi-Mapper is actually the driver, or just
an intermediary step in the process.)

Thank you,
Bill
