Subj: [kl] playing M.Butterfly--what to do?
Date: Sat, 23 Jun 2001 22:04:06 -0400

I'd like to hear from people who have played Madame Butterfly.

Our orchestra will be playing our first opera in February.
Anton Copola will be conducting.

I've played pit for musicals and ballet, but this is also my first opera.
So I don't have Puccini experience, other than a couple of arias, and
want to be ready to get full benefit and enjoy the music and conductor.

I see that I can buy the whole clarinet part from Kalmus for $30. Do you
recommend that, or is an excerpt source sufficient, in addition to score
and recording 'preview'.

I enjoyed our past season clarinet highlights--Pines of Rome, Polovetsian
Dances, Symphony Fantastique, Brahms Sym.3, Dvorak New World. Last
season was the break after 8 seasons of Nutcracker.

Thanks,
Ann
