For years, people have been doing anything possible to make it easier to
hold the clarinet. It ranges from pads on the thumbrest, turning it upside
down, relocating it (have you ever noticed that most thumb rests are even
with the hole for the middle finger? That is NOT a natural position),
playing with the instrument on their knee, etc... It may be recent that
people use straps, but the problems are certainly not new.
