Subj: [kl] old reeds - and snot-bubbling orcs
Date: Sat, 23 Jun 2001 09:30:32 -0400

The snot bubbling orcs gave me an idea. My son just turned 8 and we got him
his first clarinet for his birthday. Maybe this is too young but he was
begging for one. I thought if most kids are begging for stupid expensive
sneakers and he is begging for a clarinet it mean something, so he is
starting lessons this summer for the first time. That way we can find out if
the lessons are working out before the pressure of the school year starts. So
far so good, after 1 week he is all excited about it in the stage where he
makes more squeeks than real notes. Just glad he didn't want a trumpet or the
neighbors would burn us out. ;)

I want him to keep that mouthpiece sanitary but you know how kids are if you
nag them, they will do the opposite. So when I practiced I told him, the
reason why I always rinse my mouthpiece and reed, and dry them, is because if
people don't do that, some germy slime grows in there like snot. I said if
the snot slime grows and you put the dirty mouthpiece in your mouth like
that, it is the same as picking your nose and eating it. That got his
attention! 8 year old boys love something gross even though he was going "OH
MOM!" at me and making gagging noises. ;) But he will remember that and he
will never be able to put that mouthpiece in his mouth dirty I guarantee.
