I am having the same problem. Darryl Stevens told me about the
Hendrickson Method for Clarinet. I like it better than most beginning
methods, but it still has a few problems. Like, it doesn't seem to have
any passages whatsoever in the key of C or F in the range of 3rd space C
to high (2 leger lined) C. Darryl also told me about a beginning book by
Avram Galper, on our Klarinet List. I would really like to peruse
Avram's book, maybe use it for my beginning students.
I have the Eugene Gay Method for Clarinet, Volume I & II. I think
it cost me over $50 to get both volumes. I love the way that the book is
put together and the way that the clarinet is taught, slowly and
beautifully. However, the book is so long that a beginner could possibly
lose interest before they accomplish very much. When I am having a
particular problem with a student, I sometimes photo-copy a page or 2 of
the Gay method that deals with the problem, like for instance, "pinky"
fingering problems, or throat register problems, or going over the
break. I think it is a wonderful resource book. ANNIE

Have you seen the Eugene Gay Method? While not widely available, I do
believe it is still in print.
