For those of us whose first wooden clarinet was a "Rene Dumont" -- which I
believe were made in Czechoslovakia -- according to the Los Angeles Times,
the instrument's namesake died on Monday at age 97 in suburban Paris. Rene
Dumont was the first candidate to run for president of France in 1974 on an
environmental platform and whose influence shaped the Green Party in his
country. An agricultural economist, he was an expert on the problems faced
by developing nations. Dumont spent much of his career as a professor of
agricultural sciences at one of France's leading agricultural schools. He was
also associated with the United Nations through UNESCO and the U.N. Food and
agicultural Orginization and wrote nearly 30 books.

Apparently, Dumont had no association with either music or clarinets other
than his name.
