What to do with old reeds?

I throw them in a drawer and let them age. Every decade or so, I go through and see what's in there.

HAT, from NYC, is visiting Chicago (and me) and we were doing some bass clarinet stuff yesterday..

He looked at the reed I was using to test a mouthpiece, and he said, "Ummmmmm, Walter.......is this reed like 20 some years old?"

We looked at the markings on the back of the reed, and sure enough, Vandoren doesn't mark them that way anymore. Turns out it was a reed I must have bought pre-1981........ and that I had found in my drawer!

Wasn't the BEST reed in the world, but it was good enough for an afternoon's playing and mouthpiece testing.

I also pulled out some pre-1981 Oliveris a week or so ago, to see if they would work with a particular mouthpiece. They played very nicely too.

Moral.....unless the green fungus monster gets 'em, maybe you should keep old reeds around. When you're an old fart like me, they may come in handy!

P.S. Speaking of the green fungus monster, I sure do miss Lelia! The list just hasn't been the same without her obnoxious, smelly, infected, snot-bubbling orcs!
