Tina,

I have found that Tune-A-Day is good, too. But, I recently wrote a Clarinet
Primer for kids who are starting clarinet, having never played another
instrument. Current piano methods (I also teach piano) start young
beginners without reading music on the staff. This allows time and
attention for hand position, tone quality, rhythm. My Primer follows the
same approach. It also does not introduce tongueing until the very end. I
focus on a good sound and a flat chin. We learn quarter, half, whole, and
dotted halfs. I've found that the students don't do the one breath for one
note thing, and they can develop a strong embouchure from the beginning.
The idea is then to go on to, say, Tune-A-Day. I have used it for a couple
young kids recently, and it worked well. I would send you a copy, if you
like. It might be for sale in the future, if you think you (or anyone else)
would use it with students.

When I get a student that already plays piano (reads music) and is a little
older (11+), I use the James Collis Book 1 (Modern Course?). I like it
because it introduces sharps and flats in the low register.

I would like to see your completed research. Could you share it with us
somehow?
