I remember Bob Vagner, U. of Oregon Director of Bands and Prof. of Clarinet
1952-77, told me a wonderful story of how he had gone to the Vandoren
factory and hand selected 100 reeds by trial. He brought them home and put
them in a bottom drawer of his dresser and let them age as he used them
occasionally.

One day, he came home from work on his 30th wedding anniversary, and in a
box, wrapped up, was a beautiful, homemade clock - made from, of course,
clarinet reeds. As he was admiring the beautiful clock, Bob asked his
lovely wife where she had found all of the reeds. She replied, "In your
reject drawer of course."

Bob told me that was the only time he considered divorcing his wife.

Best wishes,
Roger Garrett
