Lacy Schroeder asks:

>Anyone have any comments or experiences with the Sewanee Summer Music
Festival in Tennessee (= The University of the South)?<

Many years ago, I went up to Sewanee from Chattanooga, where I lived, almost
every weekend. It's gorgeous country, and the school is particularly nice to
be at. It was all designed (including plans for vast expansion) by a single
architect, and large amounts of gray stone were set aside for future
construction, so it has a unified quality that is rare. I drove through a
couple of years ago, and it hasn't lost anything.

The festival at that time was for high school players, with faculty drawn
from various orchestras in the state. It was quite small - all chamber
music. The students were decent, and the faculty superb. I have no idea
what it's evolved into. Back then it was quite small and intimate.

There's no "town." Not even a tiny one. Monteagle, the nearest place with
stores, is 15 miles away.

The university has a reputation for high intellect, liberalism (at least for
the South) and devotion to literature. It's also laid-back.

It gets HOT there in the summer, even though it's on top of a mountain, and
not all buildings are air-conditioned. Bring a sweater, too, as evenings are
cool.

Keep a journal, or take lots of notes, and give us a report when you get back.

Best regards.

Ken Shaw
