I saw the DeLouits (sp!) cases at the OK Symposium. They are $100 apiece.

The box design I have is nearly identical - interesting that we came up
with the same results. He is using barrel hinges though, and I am not for
a couple of reasons - the first being expense - they will add $7 to the
cost of the case. The second is the difficulty required to install
them. The jig I use will drill the holes, but success is not always
guaranteed - you really need a special milling machine (which is very
expensive). Therefore, I will use hinges that push into a pre-made slot in
the rear of the case and are very durable. The case will have the 45
degree angle so that it opens and stops at a 90 degree angle. The clasps
he uses are push catches - which he agreed take at least 30 minutes each to
install. When making 20-30 at a time, that simply is not productive - and
frankly, I don't want to pass that hourly cost to customers. I would
assume, other than the humidor (which takes up 1/3 of the space within the
case), and the slotted aluminum surface the reeds sit on, these cases take
an enormous amount of time to make. The rubber gasket adds cost to the
project too - both in materials and time. And .........mahogany aint
cheap.......... So, I will probably use clasps similar to Harrison's, but
I will have them chromed (nickle plated) to help avoid bending. I'm also
considering including an extra clasp with each case - in case one does fail.

It's great to have reed cases available - but we need to be able to afford
them. I'm thinking of students and every-day performers.........not the
person who wants to spend $100 on a case!

Best wishes,
Roger Garrett
