Greetings Roger,
Finally had a chance to catch up with
klarinet posts and enjoyed reading your
comments about the OK Symposium. Thank
you for the kind words. Perhaps someday
I will be as brave as Annie, Nicholas, and
George and play for a masterclass! Like
you, I enjoyed Eddie's ability to teach others
to improvise.
It was also a treat to hear Ricardo Morales
teach and perform. I was amazed at how his
musicianship has evolved since the last time
we heard him live at the ICS Conference 4 years
ago in Lubbock, TX. WOW!
Ricardo's use of analogies in the masterclass
was wonderful. "Your playing along so beautifully,
then, YEOW, an ugly unfocussed sound, just like
that first scratch on your incredible, new, shiny
sports car, OUCH. Do that in a big, rough 4WD,
and who cares?!"
My favorite statement from Eddie was
"by the time you get to the performance and
get on stage to play all this STUFF, you
need to make sure you STUFF yourself first."
It reminds me of what my Dad used to say,
"know your STUFF." Back in the days of lessons
at NU with Mr. Brody, you knew you played well
when he said "That's the STUFF!"
So it's time to go practice,
"so much STUFF to learn!" : )
