I play an older R13 (circa 1955) and have noticed that I don't always need
the Eb key for high D as well as other oddities - like I play my throat 'A'
with nearly every hole closed save the first finger of the left hand to get
it *in the ball park* of being in tune. Since I cannot afford to purchase
another instrument at this time, it will just have to do. I agree that the
variations are not necessarily R13 versus other clarinets, I have always
approached them as other possibilities for intonation improvement.

.02 - inserted, have at it.

Not so. This variation in fingerings is shown in the original fingering
chart for the complete Klose method, which was originally published in the
1800s, long before there ever was an R-13. So they can hardly be "R-13"
fingerings. The chart states that some instruments will need the Eb key for
notes like high D and others will not.
