Subj: Re: [kl] Rossi vs R13

Having played the Rossi clarinet for over a yr. now I feel relatively
qualified to make a few comments on it. It is not an R-13, many of the
fingerings that we call "normal" are really R-13 fingerings, I don't use the
sliver key for high f, or the eb key on the high D. I think it has a
beautiful sound, but a different sound than the buffet. I'm using it on most
of my solo work and I find I still use my R13 for ensemble work. Not because
the R13 is better, but the r-13 tunes more like the other r13's around me.
The R-13 has the sensation of feeling like it is playing louder the rossi,
but from doing recordings live and in studio situations, I've been told by
the Sound engineers that this is not the case. I play double lip and the
Rossi balances better in my hands when I'm playing standing up. It's a few
ounces lighter! All in all I think it is a really well made instrument. I am
playing a barrel that Mr. Rossi made for me a much more tapered barrel than
originally came with the instrument. I have to say this was a real
enhancement to the instrument. I'm hopefully going to get one made for the A
clarinet soon.
What can you say about the R13, what else can you play for under $2000,
that sounds as good, tunes as well and is still the standard by which every
clarinet is judged? After 1.5 years of playing it, I say the rossi is a
really good clarinet, is it radically superiour to the R-13? No, it's a
subtle improvement. Would I recommend it to my students, probably not. Most
of mine are highschool and middle school, if the go to music school, they
should be on the buffet. I still find really good used R13s for $600 around.
I'd recommend it to people who want to try something a little different and
willing to spend the money for a top quality instrument that tunes better
with other woodwinds, that it does with R13s. The Rossi is a joy to play in
woodwind quintet. There is another intangible quality that the rossi has, it
seems like it is easier to play, on a four hour Bar mitzvah, I do notice I'm
less fatigued by the end of it.
If anyone wants to hear my rossie, I'll be doing a concert in Bern
Switzerland on July 4th, Saas-fee, Switz on July 6th, and Salsomaggiore,
Italy on July 8. I'll be playing a piece titled 'Nocturne" By Eric Richards,
and "Hora staccato." If any list members are there, say hi
