- no chance to hear anything today - including Paul
Garritson. Paul, a very interesting guy with an intense curiosity, could
be heard rehearsing with his pianist yesterday - and he didn't know I was
lurking until I told him last night. A really terrific sound and facility
- I wish I had heard the recital. His bio shows him to be a star, yet he
is one of the most down-to-earth people you could ever meet. I hope to see
him again at another similar event!

Yes, Roger, he is a great player. I am privileged to know the man, also,
along with his daughters who are all extremely talented musicians as well. I
ran into him at St. Louis Woodwind and Brass in Florissant (a repair shop
north of St. Louis, for those of you who aren't familiar) and we had a nice,
lengthy chat while waiting for the repairs to be finished. This was back in
February, and later it turns out that he was hired to play for the SLSO as
an extra in Shostakovich's 4th along with my teacher, Mac Hinson. I attended
the concert, Powell Club seating, of course, and they were the two best
sounding players in the section. It was quite a delight to see them both
play together.

He is also the clarinet teacher at University of Missouri-Columbia (again,
for those of you that don't know!) and was a friend of mine's teacher while
my friend (my predecessor as principal clarinet in the SLSYO) was at Mizzou.
His wife used to teach flute at my school, but I think they decided to
simplify and she doesn't teach here in Edwardsville (IL) anymore. One of the
flute students that has since graduated from Edwardsville continued to study
with Marie after she left. I don't blame her! She is a great teacher right
along there with Paul. And such a lovely family they have! I have been in
the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra with their daughters for some time,
and two of them have won the concerto competitions in past years.

Isn't it nice to know the same people?
