That's exactly how I pick my mouthpieces. I take a tuner with me.

The last time I had Herr Minack from Bremerhafen reface a mouthpiece, the
arrangement was: I should pick out a mouthpiece which was well in tune and
bring it to him.

Maybe this is more common in Germany??
