I returned a bit early from the OK symposium - got home at 3:00 PM today,
and my family seemed very happy to see me - including the dog. Ok - so
they have no taste.

Now - for the trip:

David Neithhamer (whose name I probably misspelled again) is a clarinet
God. Not only that, he's a really great guy! I had a pun time visiting
with him (yes - I misspelled that on purpose David). Despite our wondering
if he would ever play at the symposium (his recital was left OUT of the
program - along with his entire biography), he managed to show up and
provide one of the most interesting recitals I have heard in a long
time. It was great to finally meet someone I have only known via email and
mouthpieces. The Richmond Symphony is lucky indeed to have this fellow in
their orchestra.

I briefly met Lori Lovato - right after the Eddie Daniels masterclass - and
she is a lovely person. She has a very nice husband too - nice to meet
them both. Would have been great to hear Lori play, but it didn't happen
this time around - maybe next time......... I know that she is known as E.
Daniels mentioned her from the stage. It would be important to note here
that I also heard Annie play in the masterclass. While she likes to remain
humble regarding her playing abilities, I can assure all of you who did not
attend and have not heard her play, that she humbles most of us with her
ability to improvise - very, very impressive - and tasteful. Lots and lots
of the "X" factor Annie.

I finally got to meet Bradly Wong - a virtuoso peformer - extremely
polished in his presentation - and a terrifically nice person! He played a
half recital for which I knew literally none of the pieces - but enjoyed
them all immensely. Great player!

I mentioned meeting Dan Paprocki earlier - but I didn't mention that I was
able to hear him trying out items in the exhibits area - quite impressive -
a future performer for one of the ICA recitals I hope. He was at most
events that I was at - I can tell he is curious and intense!

The Daniels and Webber master classes were great - I especially enjoyed
Eddie Daniels as a teacher. I was impressed with his abilities. It's one
thing to have the improvisational chops and the "sound", but it is entirely
another thing to have the highly developed ear, scholarship (of each tune)
AND the internationally acclaimed facility to go along with all of the
above. I was floored to say the least. Here is a person who can compete
in any arena - and appeared to be a very, very good teacher to boot.

Todd Levy played a great recital. I had the chance to hear him warming up
before his rehearsal in the hall and spoke with him briefly - wonderful
sound and control. I also met Ricardo Morales briefly - a good friend to a
mutual friend, Bob Riseling (University of Western Ontario) who introduced
us. I wish I could have heard his recital, but I needed to get to the
airport - no chance to hear anything today - including Paul
Garritson. Paul, a very interesting guy with an intense curiosity, could
be heard rehearsing with his pianist yesterday - and he didn't know I was
lurking until I told him last night. A really terrific sound and facility
- I wish I had heard the recital. His bio shows him to be a star, yet he
is one of the most down-to-earth people you could ever meet. I hope to see
him again at another similar event!

There were not as many people in attendance at OK as I remember last time I
was there (two years ago) - this may be due to the New Orleans ICA Fest
coming up. I hope more people consider attending - it is a good symposium
with lots of really great opportunities in a superb facility.

I'm probably leaving someone or something out - I'm a bit fried from the
trip (that last puddle hopping prop plane was a REAL DRAG). Any questions
- let me know - I had a good time!

Best wishes,
Roger Garrett
