Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the bore of an A clarinet slightly
larger than the bore of a Bb clarinet? The barrel would be the
logical place to translate this change from the bore of the clarinet
to the bore of the mouthpiece (which is more often than not, a Bb
mouthpiece). Both of my stock Buffet R-13 barrels came engraved with
either "A" or "Bb". The A barrel should also be shorter than the Bb,
though for some reason I have to always keep my A barrel pushed all
the way in to tune with the orchestra. (This is a university
orchestra, for your reference).

There is also the problem of getting one barrel stuck on the other
instrument! I've done it myself while messing around with a Yamaha A
barrel on a Noblet Bb clarinet. (Not as bad as the time I tried to
play a rehearsal with my Bb upper joint and my A lower joint
assembled together by mistake!)
