But now, we have to tell him why. It isn't magic, or the work of the devil
(although it may seem so at times), and it isn't an accident. There has
been at least one other answer similar to this one, but still no mention of
why the phenomenon occurs. Another answer related the source of the
acoustical operation of the clarinet to the fact that it has a cylindrical
tube, while the saxophone has a conical one. However, some organ pipes may
also be conical, and yet may produce all harmonics in their tonal structure.
We've been over this territory several times in the past. Perhaps someone
will dig this discussion out of the archives, thereby making it necessary to
go through the protracted discussion again.
