I've heard this done on the trills during the opening of Rhapsody in Blue (I
have played it that way, but now prefer it without the "growl"), and it can
be done one of two ways
Either...
Loosen your embouchure and make rrrrrrrrrrrrrr sound. (really roll that
rrrr) while playing
Or
With practice, you can make a growling noise in the back of your throat
while playing a note. Slight loosening of the embouchure may help here, but
you'll not need it as loose as for the above.

Basically, keep trying until you find a method which works for you and
produces the desired effect.
