George,

I forgot to mention this: When my teacher and I went to choose a clarinet
for me, we tried something like 10 or 12 different horns (mostly standard
R13s, a few Vintage and Prestige models). If you can, go to a store that
has several horns of the type(s) you're interested in in stock. Different
examples of the same model are not all the same! I got a better horn
because we picked the best sounding horn out of several.

If you plan to buy mail order, it may be possible to get them to send you
three, with the understanding that you'll return 2 of them. (I don't know
how the finances would work -- you might need to pay for all 3, and get a
refund when you return the ones you don't want.) I've never actually done
this, but I've heard that some places will do it.
