When I took my mid-1970's vintage to be overhauled by Tom Ridenour, he
indicated that for a period of time Buffet had increased the length of the
register tube in order to improve the tone of the throat Bb. It had this
effect, but also created a problem with low overtones in with the G-B range
immediately above the staff (as well as the swab sticking problem you
describe). Buffet eventually shortened the tube, solving these problems.
Tom recommended having this done to mine during the overhaul, which
corrected the overtone and swabbing problem. I didn't notice any striking
change to the throat Bb or the intonation, and was please with the results.
(I was experiencing the overtone problem, but thought it was due to my
embouchure and setup, not some acoustical property of the horn).

Is there a standard length for the register
tube on an
R-13 A clarinet? Mine seems exceptionally
long. I have
owned two other A clarinets and played
several others,
none of which have I had so much trouble
getting a
swab through. Francois Kloc of Buffet stated
that changing the
length of the register tube can change the
pitch and
tone of the clarinet. If I want to try a
shorter tube, what
do you recommend? thank you,
jr
