Ann,
Are you perhaps overlooking the important point that most contras (if not
all, I'm not sure) don't have an altissimo half-hole vent (as do all modern bass
clarinets)? I can play two octaves into the altissimo on my bass, but I can
barely (by overblowing and various attempts at false-fingerings) get three or
four notes into the altissimo on the contra, on a good day. I'm currently
experimenting with adding a separate altissimo vent hole (and associated key)
onto my contra (a plastic Buescher which is identical to a Bundy), but so far
I've had very little luck in finding a placement for this vent that makes the
altissimo as easy to play as on a bass clarinet.
