Walter observes -

>Remember these are your hands. No one else will ever have an idea of
how they
>work while playing. How "flat" or "curved" yours fingers should be is
really
>dependent on the LENGTH of your fingers and the position of the tone
holes,
>rings, and keys of your clarinet.

Yep - I wish that my pinkies were long enough that I COULD curve them
when hitting some of the farther keys on my bass clar. Well actually
they aren't straight but this is due to past disagreements with
volleyballs
and is not the the graceful, gentle arc prescribed by _proper_
clarinettists.

>There is no "musical" benefit to "curved" fingers. To diagnose that all
players
>must curve their fingers is a harmful recommendation.

>Here is my new motto: Believe NOTHING anyone else tells you that you
"must" do.
>Try it and see what works best for you. There is no "one" solution.

Especially on the Internet. --- but wait a minute, Walter, when you say
this
are you saying it as something we "must" do ??? :<o

By the way Walter, did you ever rebend the neck on your bass ?
