I believe Buffet started the small-bore trend with the smaller,
polycylindrical, undercut, tone-holed R-13. Before that, most folks were
playing basically cylindrical, straight-holed .590 Selmer Centered Tones
and such. The tone of smaller-bored horns is (or at least is ADVERTISED to
be) SWEETER than the large-bore tone. Classical players in general seem to
have decided this is a good thing. Jazz players often prefer the
big-toned, large-bore sound, some even going to vintage Albert system horns
to get it. The Leblanc Pete Fountain models (the GOOD ones, not the Vito
with his name stamped on it) are .590.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is TOO LOUD!
