My instrument is the larger Howarth bore. Howarth makes an "S2"
and an "S3" model. The S2 is their original and larger bore (in the
nieghborhood of .580 or .585) (but not as large as .590 jazz
instruments) with the 'English horn' sound, and the S3 is their newer
and smaller bore to satisfy the modern trend toward smaller bores

Hi Bill and Emily particularly

Intrigued, i've measured my 1010s.
The barrel end and joint endof the upper section are similar: Bflat
is .598, A is.602 inches.
These are mean figures - there's a + or - .001 variation in
readings(made with digital vernier calipers)
The Reg Kell mouthpiece varies between .596 and .604 Please don't
tell me this is fatal ovality! The standard Boosey & Hawkes 1010
mouthpiece measures a very round .611

It sounds like they were trying to make them .600, the variations
being within permissable manufacturing tolerances. This is is still
bigger than your Howarth S2, Bill.
Can anyone the history behind these bore variations, and why the
modern trend is towards smaller bores? I believe Jack Brymer usually
played on 1010s when I heard him, and to my ear made a wonderful
sound. Is bore size a factor of sound quality at all?

Peter
