I recently visited a university music department
and discovered that the staff are allowed one day
a week to do research. (Published research attracts
funds to the department). It was a surprise to learn that,
as a complete outside, I was in the privileged position
being able to do a little research every day,
when necessary.

It reminded me of a statement made by
Elizabeth Esteve-Coll, past director of the
Victoria and Albert Museum in London,
who said, in the press, in 1994, that:

'If you haven't got the scholarship, you're a theme park".

I am not clever enough to become a scholar, and desperately
do not want to be a theme park, so in my struggle to escape
this fate, have become some kind of database.

With few exceptions, virtually none of my personal gurus,
- those to whom I have turned over the year
to ask for help with musical matters, practical and historical
and get good results, - a process that requires the giver to
have confidence in the recipient, or else why should they
bother to expend the effort, - is anywhere near the Internet.
My need began long before it was invented.
