I think they don't bother to lurk, any more than they bother to post,
KittiPaws.

Part of what I'd always have liked to happen is that more of them --
friends of mine, quite a few of them -- joined in, and that the
discussions were richer as a result; but I'm beginning to despair of
that.

It does happen sometimes. But most of them leave very quickly, because
they get bored; or what can also happen is that then they get dissed
themselves -- unless they're fawned over, of course. (And that's just
as bad.)

It's the difficulty of the medium, as I said before. Your own post
is an example of what is actually a meaningful (even if presently
acrimonious) disagreement, being dismissed as merely acrimonious just
because that's the easiest thing for someone to do.

You don't need to read, or think, or try to write appropriately if you
do that, after all:-)
