Mouthpieces are really something that each person has to decide for the
themselves. I play both the 5RV and the B45. Each has it's plusses and
minus. For me, these mouthpieces require slightly different reed strengths
to get the best out of them. My personal experience (yours may differ), is
that the B45 will play louder and has more flexibility but that it is a
little harder to control. If one is not careful, it can be somewhat harsh
up in the altissimo region but still it can be controlled. The 5RV doesn't
require the player to exert as much control but then again it's not as
flexible. The 5RV seems to give a nicer sounding altissimo but the lowest
notes may be less full unless you've got very good air support. It gives a
more controlled sound with less work than the 5RV. But for me that's not
been a problem.

What do I do? I use whatever one seems appropriate that day. If I
anticipate playing in the altissimo range a lot that day, I'll usually go
for the 5RV. On the other hand, for outdoor concerts, I'll usually select
the B45 for the extra volume whether or not it requires a lot of altissimo
playing.

On my Eb, I use a Vandoren 5RV only. The Eb's need all the control you can
get and so there I use a mouthpiece that is not too flexible.
