Ed that was the scary thing. The conVEXity was so slight I could not confirm it visually. I only knew that it was there, because when I pushed down on my measuring glass at differet points, I got different facing measurements. (The lower down on the table I pressed, the greater the opening and the length of the curve).

I guess the length of the table on a bass mouthpiece really magnifies the impact of even a slight irregularity.
